My Journey with ACWAY: Transformative Interfaith Dialogue

By Sibu Szymanowska – ACWAY Fellow 2019

When I first heard about ACWAY (A Common Word Among the Youth), I was intrigued but hesitant. As an atheist, I wasn’t sure how I’d fit into a space that was primarily focused on religious engagement. I’m an advocate for religious freedom but due to my lack of faith I’ve always been shunned aside and misunderstood in these spaces. Little did I know, this experience would completely change me.

Breaking down barriers

Participating in ACWAY twice has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life. From the very beginning, I was amazed by the inclusivity and openness of the organization. ACWAY welcomes individuals from all backgrounds, whether religious or non-religious, and I never felt out of place despite my lack of faith. I found myself having meaningful conversations about the state of the world, and how interfaith dialogue was the key to breaking down the barriers that are currently affecting us all. This led to deep connections that up to this day I still have.

The Power of Dialogue

Interfaith dialogue isn’t just about people of different religions talking to each other—it’s about creating a space where diverse worldviews can coexist and where everyone has a voice. ACWAY’s commitment to this idea was evident in every aspect of the program. It did the impossible – it created a sense of respect and curiosity that went beyond our differences.

The best part about ACWAY is its ongoing commitment to creating a community. After each conference or workshop, participants are encouraged to deliver projects in their own communities. These projects are the heart of ACWAY’s mission. They turn talks into action. For me, this was the best part—taking the conversations we had and applying them to real-world challenges.

Building Lasting Bonds

Over the years, I’ve participated in many groups and conferences, but none have compared to the connections I’ve made through ACWAY. The connections I’ve made aren’t just professional networks—they’re friendships built on mutual understanding and a shared commitment to making the world a better place. We come from different walks of life, but we understand each other.

A Life-Changing Experience

Looking back, my time with ACWAY has been nothing short of life-changing. As an atheist, ACWAY has continued to teach me about different faiths and the power of dialogue in bridging divides. It has also reinforced the idea in me that we CAN aim for more than coexistence, but also alliances, and most importantly, friendships – no matter what our religious background is.

ACWAY has shown me that interfaith dialogue is not just for the religious—it’s for anyone who believes in the power of conversation to create change. It’s a space where everyone is welcome, where every voice matters, and where every participant leaves with a renewed sense of purpose.

If you’re considering getting involved with ACWAY, I can’t recommend it enough. Attending an ACWAY event will translate into a wider network, support and new global friendships! I’ve now visited or met up with ACWAY fellows in 3 continents, and even attended one of their weddings recently! I’ve participated in joint projects with a few of them. This is more than just an organization—it’s a community that will challenge you, support you, and change you in ways you never imagined..
