Description

The project was launched voluntary in the frames of Summer School on European System of Human Rights in Viadrina University (Frankfurt (Oder), Germany). It has several strengths, such as: cultural and religious diversity of international participants; location –Germany, which is considered to be a country that receives the highest amount of migrants in the world (cultural clashes and integration of migrants are the most relevant issues nowadays).

AIm

The round-table aimed to bring together young people from different backgrounds in discussion and conflict transformation activities from a legal perspective.

Objectives

The main objectives (personal, organizational and institutional) of the “Modern Challenges to Cultural Equality” roundtable are:

  1. To develop awareness and competences (knowledge, skills and attitude) of participants in intercultural learning and dialogue, including a critical understanding of their personal and collective roles in the transformation of conflicts
  2. To share among participants their personal and professional experience in combating cultural/religious inequality and their future plans
  3. To motivate and support participants in their role as multipliers and peer leaders in defending human rights, encouraging them to be involved in current international and European students’ initiatives.

Methodology

The round-table was based on mutual learning situations among participants, making use of a variety of working methods. Interactive and media sources (presentation, videos etc.) were used during the event. The guidance was given to participants how to register on ACWAY platform and NoHateSpeechMovement platform. The participants were able to share their personal and professional experiences on cultural/religious conflicts from the legal perspective.

Outcome – a video devoted to the intercultural and interfaith issues “We believe”.

Activity summary

The round-table “Modern challenges to cultural equality” included three parts:

  1. Modern cultural challenges: Presentation on current relevant issues in cultural and religious inequality: integration of ethnic and cultural minorities into the European society; migration crisis; islamophobia. Attempt to look at them from the perspective of human rights law.
  2. Discussion and story-sharing: Young people with different backgrounds and perspectives had a fruitful discussion on stated questions. Personal examples from their native communities helped participants to share their experience and to realize the global character of the current problems.
  3. How to get involved?:  Outlook for current opportunities to promote cultural/religious tolerance and human rights. Presentation of ACWAY, No Hate Speech Movement, Youth Peace Camp, Die ProjectWelt etc.
