Description

IDG Goal: Goal 3 – Universal Freedom and Protection of Religion

In South Africa, growing tensions between religious communities, state institutions, and legal frameworks, particularly around religious freedom, constitutional rights, and the state regulation of religion, highlighted an urgent need for structured dialogue. In response, a two-day national Colloquium on Religion and Law was convened, bringing together 65 participants including faith leaders, legal experts, academics, civil society representatives, and state institutions, with a balanced gender representation and diverse faith backgrounds spanning Christian, Muslim, Jewish, African Traditional Religion, and secular legal professionals.

The colloquium strengthened engagement between religious communities and key constitutional bodies, including the Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Commission and the South African Human Rights Commission, and resulted in a formal agreement to host a follow-up national colloquium in 2026. For the broader community, the event improved understanding of constitutional protections for religious freedom, promoted peaceful coexistence among diverse faith traditions, and empowered community leaders with rights-based knowledge, reinforcing the constructive role religion can play in social cohesion and democratic governance.
