Dance Off the Differences was an interactive intercultural initiative held on 20 August at Caspian Business Plaza in Baku, Azerbaijan. The project aimed to bring young people together to explore cultural diversity through music and dance, two universal forms of expression that transcend language barriers. Recognising that discussing cultural identity can sometimes feel intimidating, the project created a relaxed and engaging environment where participants could connect, learn, and share through movement and rhythm.
The activity began with a discussion on cultural differences across regions including Azerbaijan, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and the West, followed by an introduction to ACWAY. Participants then engaged in a series of dance sessions, learning and practising styles from various cultures, including Indian, Nigerian, Colombian, Kyrgyz, Azerbaijani, and hip-hop, as well as a guided salsa class. The sessions encouraged interaction, laughter, and open conversation, allowing participants to reflect on cultural expressions in an informal and inclusive setting.
Main Aims & Challenges
The project aimed to highlight the role of music and dance in cultural identity and demonstrate how these can serve as tools for intercultural understanding and unity. It sought to reduce barriers such as language limitations and hesitation around engaging with unfamiliar cultures, showing that shared experiences can foster connection.
A key challenge was the inability to include international representatives as originally planned. This was addressed by inviting a salsa instructor and encouraging participants to learn and share dances from different cultures themselves, which enhanced ownership and participation. Another challenge was lower female participation, highlighting the need for more balanced outreach in future activities.
Target Audience
The project engaged approximately 15 young people aged 11–30, primarily from Azerbaijan, with some participants from Turkey. The group consisted of active youth, including members connected to the Azerbaijan Youth Development Organization, with varying levels of confidence in participation, some actively dancing, others engaging through observation and discussion.
Impact
The project successfully created a safe and enjoyable space for intercultural exchange, where participants were able to connect beyond language and cultural differences. It increased awareness of global cultural practices and encouraged openness to new experiences. Participants demonstrated enthusiasm, actively engaging in both discussions and dance activities, while also expressing curiosity about other cultures and interest in ACWAY’s mission.
Overall, the initiative reinforced the idea that simple, shared experiences, such as music and dance, can play a powerful role in breaking down barriers, building confidence, and fostering mutual understanding among diverse groups.
